Living from the outside in, to inside out

This very special person to me is someone you wouldn’t notice as being particularly positive or ‘’spiritual’’ in nature, but he has inspired me in ways that continue to surprise me. His positive outlook on life, simple yet high-lifted thinking, and just overall a treat to be around and talk to, make him someone well worth discovering. I’ve known him 5 years ago and I had noticed when we reconnected last year that something was different about him. He had somewhat of a darker side to him before that now seemed to be lifted, and he was much lighter, maybe even happier.

He sent me an article that he said inspired him a lot (I later told him that I was the author of the article .. true story!!) which talked about letting emotions arise, feeling feelings, some basic spiritual cues that I wouldn’t have ever thought would interest him. So he peaked my curiosity to inquire further on what had changed in those years that made him a new man!

It turns out he went through some tough times getting over a break-up, he had lost his joy for living and was in a very dark place, which would become the pivotal point to going on a self-discovery journey of his own. He didn’t go through the conventional (and expensive, let’s admit) spiritual self-help trajectory of therapies, teachers, gurus, healings, etc. Nop… his journey cost him approximately 20$ on a couple of books, quite a bit of Youtube videos, and just enough self-motivation and discipline.

Sam describes himself as a positive and happy person in nature. He has always felt a lot of gratitude for the life he was given, for everything he has, and for the life experiences he has accumulated so far. His life philosophy before this transformation was : You only Live Once, so make the best of it ! Relentless, fearless, he would plow through life and take advantage of it to the maximum. That entailed a lot of partying, drugs, friends, girls, etc … for him, he was living the dream! But at his low point he felt this shallowness, and a calling to find more meaning to his life. He felt like he was stuck in this loop of girlfriend – breakup – partying, and wanted to find balance and happiness within himself now. His learning process through the books of Dolores Cannon and Drunvalo Melchizedek taught him a lot about life, death, the afterlife, time being an illusion, simultaneous other dimensions, to name only a few. This changed his outlook on life dramatically. He no longer saw death as an end, but merely a pass way to the next experience; the afterlife, which he would further reincarnate and come back to earth for new experiences. So instead of living life on the edge as if everyday was his last, he realized this is only one of many lives, a process, and that he is here to spread good to the world, to leave it a better place every time. The intensity with which he lived by has eased. He is now able to see the bigger picture and can connect to a grander scheme of life experiences, with much more profoundness.

I asked him how his ‘’happiness’’ had changed prior and after this transformation. He said he was happy in both cases, but the difference is one came from external things : partying, friends, work, clubs, etc. He found fulfillment and joy from those, and allegedly says he never had time for a ‘’down’’. He was continuously stimulated from his outside world.

Whereas this new type of happiness emanates from the inside out. It always is sitting inside of him, completely independent of external stimuli. He doesn’t need drugs or outside ‘’fun’’ things to make him happy. He embodies it and does his best to spread it out to the world!

One of the greatest transformations it has had in his life is his outlook on it and how he connects to his experience as a human being. He sees the world with new eyes. Before he was more in his bubble, merely going along with life, but he now feels more connected to the rest of the world. Complete strangers can feel like friends. He has love for every being. He acknowledges and has respect for others more than ever. He also can’t tolerate violence and negativity, who were prior a part of his life. He would find inconceivable to hurt someone for the fun of it, or for the sake of making money. People who can do such things are like from another planet to him.

The information he gathered from his journey were mostly knowledge, but also practice. Some changed his life progressively, some drastically. The ones that took more time and practice were meditation, taking care of his body and what he puts in it, training his mind to be more positive and clear his thoughts from the negative stream. All these took some discipline, but most of what created lasting change were simply the understanding and knowledge that came from educating himself on life and spirituality. To him, knowledge itself can be the gateway to being ‘’enlightened’’ in a sense.

This transition took place a couple years back, and I was curious to know how he implemented those in his everyday life, today. He told me there are ups and downs, nothing is constant. If he feels there is a lack in one area, he will put in the effort to get back in shape, but if there isn’t an indicator that that area needs attention, he won’t forcefully put energy into it just for the sake of ‘’maintenance’’.

I asked him if he could give a piece of advice to his 10-year-younger self, what would it be ? He boldly told me nothing. He wouldn’t change a single thing about how he lived his life, since it brought him to where he is now, which is better than he could ever have wished for.

He can now be proud to say he goes to bed every night with no regrets. A free spirit, an open heart and a clear mind is how he goes about life. Of course being incarnated on earth comes with its load of challenges, ups and downs, but he has found that place within himself where he feels at peace, which most people spend a lifetime searching for.

And for that, I salute you my friend.
